June was a busy month. On June 8, Heather Hope and her husband, Vulcan, spoke to the school about their travels to a South African game preserve. They had us enthralled. We will have them come back again!
The 5th and 6th graders had a wonderful time at Yomiyuri Land on June 9.
They could ride many rides and bond with each other and their teacher. Thank you, Hiromi Brown, for volunteering to help supervise the students with Mr. Brown.
During Personal Safety Week, the students learned a lot about personal safety and their bodies. The teachers worked hard to make this an interesting and meaningful time for the students.
Thank you for your generous food donations to the Yamanashi Food Bank! You are teaching good values to your students through your example.
The art fair is amazing, as usual. Please come and leave fan mail for the budding artists! The art fair will close on June 30.
July is a busy month at New Life International School. On the 7th, besides going to the library and receiving report cards, the students will celebrate Beach Day! All day the learning activities will include an ocean theme. Each child is encouraged to dress for the occasion with flower skirts or shorts, t-shirts, sandals, sunglasses, and/or beach hats. This is a great, active day full of learning and fun.

Report cards have changed this year. You will receive the report by email. If you aren’t sure we have your current email address, please let your child’s teacher know, or you will not receive your child’s grade report. When you receive the email with your child’s grade, please copy and paste this reply: I have received my child’s grades.” Your child’s teacher will know you have seen the grades.
July 10 through July 13, NLIS students will be working hard on standardized testing. Please ensure they sleep on time, eat a good breakfast, and come to school on time this week.
July 14, Friday, there are no classes. This is a Parent-teacher Meeting day. You may have received the letter, or you will soon get a letter from your child’s teacher with a time for you to come and discuss your child’s accomplishments. The teachers will show you your child’s test scores. The meeting is only about 15 minutes, so please be on time. More than half of our students have a brother or a sister (or both) attending NLIS. To help the families not have long waits between meetings, Mr. Brown and I worked hard to make a schedule to help eliminate long delays between classes.
July 17th is Sea Day. It is a national holiday.
July 20, Thursday, is the last day before the summer vacation. It is a half-day. Every class ends at 12:00. There is no lunch on this day. However, this is a fun-filled day for NLIS. Students will play with water balloons, have water relays, and eat ice pops. I will write more about this day later.
From July 24 to July 28, NLIS has a summer school from 9:00 to 3:00. NLIS students get a 20% discount on this fun week. The price is 30,000 yen for the public but 24,000 yen for NLIS students. The theme is camping, and we have a lot of great activities prepared:
STEM science projects include making a boat that floats for at least 30 seconds, a waterproof tent, a fishing pole, and more. We will play many fun outdoor games, do crafts, sing camp songs, and make good friends. We will read books and watch two movies with a camping theme. During the 1 hour of movie time, the school provides snacks, so it’s like going to the theater. If you are interested, please let us know soon, and we will sign your child up for this fun week. It’s for grades kindergarten through 8th grade.
July will go fast, and then we will have a summer break from July 21 through September 3. I hope you all have fun plans for this summer, and we’ll be ready for another semester in September!
