Dear Parents,

Thank you for coming yesterday to support your children. They were very excited to have you see them in the classrooms.

We have MANY exciting activities for the month of October. Please see below and mark your calendars. We are looking forward to an eventful month!

October Events

October 5th and 19th, Wednesdays: English Bible study will start for parents from 2:15-3:00

We will meet every other week. The lessons are all independent of each other, so please come anytime you can. Everyone is invited.

October 7, Friday, 11:00-12:00: Violin Concert by Mrs. Liu Wei

A big thank you to Sawako Takai for introducing her to us! Unfortunately, there isn’t room for parents due to Covid-19 protocol.

October 10, Monday: The school is closed for the national holiday.

October 11, Tuesday: Annual student-led parent-teacher meetings will be held.

Please make sure to come on time since we have limited times to meet and limited parking. Your child is preparing for this meeting now and is getting quite nervous about it. ;)

October 14 & 28, Fridays: Library

October 17th, Monday: 100 Days

Elementary students will celebrate 100 days of school by doing all kinds of activities having to do with hundreds – Japanese history 100 years ago, 100 exercises, how we will look when we are 100 years old…

October 18th, Tuesday: School Picture Day

38Shots, Jeff and Cayl, will take the annual professional photos of all the students. Two background colors of white or beige for the individual photos are offered. You may choose to have only one color or a mix. Just like last year, COVID-19 protocols will be in place for both the NLIS staff and students. Jeff and Cayl say they are looking forward to the day of the photoshoot and may all the students’ smiles be extra bright for that day!

October 20th, Thursday: Midorigaoka Gym and Park Sports Field Trip

The students and teachers will leave the school at 9:05 to walk to the gym. Please have your child dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes. Each child must have indoor shoes for the gym, an obento lunch, a vinyl mat, and a thermos of water or tea. We will participate in several sports and relays in the gym until 12:00. Then we will walk to the park and have a picnic! The students will play outside until 2:30 and then walk back to the school. Parents are welcome to join us on this fun day. It’s going to be a fun, exhausting day!

Note: NLIS is getting 14 air conditioners cleaned on this day, so I have to be at the school from 10:30 to let the company in the building.

October 20th, Wednesday night from 8:00 to 11:00 PM: WASC Training

Mr. Rasson and I have a training virtual meeting with WASC. We are training to be qualified to observe other schools in Asia that are working toward accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. We are doing very well toward our goal and expect to be visited again in the fall of 2023 in order to obtain full accreditation.

October 24th, Monday: Open Campus Day

Prospective parents will come to tour the campus, listen to a presentation, and observe the classes.

October 27th, Thursday: Picture retakes for those who were absent on the 18th

October 28th, Friday: Fall Class Parties

This year we are asking for all students to dress for their “dream job.” We hope to see our students looking like doctors, nurses, lawyers, firemen, policemen, teachers, salary workers, and prime ministers! The students may wear their outfits all day or may change into them for the party. No other theme of dress is allowed. We’ll try to do different themes each year. If you agreed to bring some food or drink for the parties, thank you! We appreciate your help in making our fall party a fun time to celebrate the season.
